I seriously loved this book. On the surface, the story is fairly straightforward and tends to recycle elements and plot points somewhat from Prelude to Foundation. But for me, what made the book more poignant was the significance of the story itself. Looking at it practically, there are quite a few dramatic jumps in time and the book feels fairly condensed in terms of the amount of time that is covered held against the length of the book. And I suspect that if Asimov had been younger, he mightThe best SF series ever.
Plot: 3 out of 5. After the enjoyable ride and unexpected twists of Prelude to Foundation, this one feels rather meh. The writing could be more fleshed out to lend impact to the story, and this is where Asimov didn't shine.Characters: 4 out of 5. It's Asimov, it's a Foundation novel, albeit one written to join with his original Trilogy written 40 years earlier, so it's going to be good if you enjoy this type of Sci Fi. That said it is probably the weakest of them all, and if I could only give it 4 1/2 stars I would, as I can't it has to be 5. In terms of Asimov's writing, this is the last work exploring the Foundation; the copyright date is actually after his death. As some have noted, there is something of a contradiction here. By the time the Foundation series ends (with "Foundation and Earth"), the Foundation is kaput in terms of the future, and Galaxia is to take its place.
