This is now my third time reading through this brilliant series and I am reminded again how beautifully written and how wonderfully, addictively enjoyable they are.This is the last book that Patrick OBrian completed before his death, the twentieth of this great series. This is a sad day; a day I have been putting off for months. It will be a day long remembered. I have been sailing with these three companionable fellows (Jack Aubrey, Stephen Maturin, and Patrick O'Brian) for a couple of years now, through twenty novels plus several companion books. Ive loved reading these twenty Aubrey/Maturin novels and they are some of the very few books which Ive re-read. Theyve given me a very complete joy, and I can only echo the words of author Jan Morris, who is quoted on the back cover of my copy: We aficionados scarcely feel them to be novels at all. They are a world of their own, one full of excitement, mystery, charm and good manners of which, over three decades, we have ourselves become citizens.
