Narrative As Books Strange Meeting
Susan Hill's classic novel Strange Meeting tells of the power of love amidst atrocities.'He was afraid to go to sleep. For three weeks, he had been afraid of going to sleep . . .'
Young officer John Hilliard returns to his battalion in France following a period of sick leave in England. Despite having trouble adjusting to all the new faces, the stiff and reserved Hilliard forms a friendship with David Barton, an open and cheerful new recruit who has still to be bloodied in battle. As the pair approach the front line, to the proximity of death and destruction, their strange friendship deepens. But each knows that soon they will be separated . . .

I had not read Susan Hill before, but when I've seen her titles I thought she veered toward ghost stories. As I chose to read this because it continues my exploration of WWI, I wasn't sure what to expect from her. It was nothing of what might have been and is a fine contribution to the sub-genre.'...By the next war, the message will have got through. There will never be another war. There will always be wars. Men couldnt be so stupid, John! After all this? Isnt the only real purpose of our beingI steeled myself for a non-happy endinghaving recently read Pat Barkers wonderful trilogyand I wasnt disappointed. Im saying this upfront, because theres no point beating about the bush. If you enjoyed Barkers work, then youll certainly enjoy this little book. Its hardly more than a novella, really, but packs a beautiful punch.I admit I was put off a little when I first cracked the book open and started to read, because it is clearly aiming at the literary marketnothing wrong with that, but
I don't think this is a very well known or celebrated book, but with the exception of Barker's Regeneration Trilogy, I can't think of another World War I story that has moved me as deeply. While in many ways a subtle novel, missing a lot of the overblown, overwrought "movie-moments" found in other war novels, it seamlessly captures the agony and ugliness of a war that devoured a whole generation of young men. It in no way glorifies the war, and presents it as what it is: unadulterated,
I read this book in a day. It was dull and predictable and not as fantastic as everyone claims. I did not enjoy it at all.
John Hilliard is an officer in the British army recently fighting in the trenches of northern France against the Germans in the horror of the First World War. Taking stock of his life in England, John knows his life has been forever changed by the scars of war, he makes his farewells to his distant family and returns to his battalion in France, never knowing if this is the final time hell see England. On returning to France John meets a new officer David Barton, who he shares a billet with. David
Set in the First World War. Beautifully written, it almost reads like a poem, if not exactly Wilfred Owen's poem of the same title. Trench horror contrasts with the unreality of life in Blighty experienced by one of the characters in the novel, home on leave; so unreal he can't wait to get back to France. The' strange meeting' is that between two officers, John and David (David and Jonathan?) and the resulting bond between them. One of them writes as a poet might Owen??It brought the war, its
I have attempted this book twice and I cant get anything from it. For me its dull, predictable, boring, badly written and has some small errors. A shame because I love her ghost story books.
