Interpretation As Books Racing Hummingbirds
Racing Hummingbirds examines, critiques, and at times delights in one woman's navigation through the many worlds of manic depression and her struggle to maintain humanity in the process. Jeanann Verlee's award-winning debut collection is a series of narratives, prayers, and conjurings which address gender, sex, race, poverty, heartbreak, and survival with such stark intimacy, you will find yourself living inside. These poems cannot possibly be about you, yet they are. They cross boundaries and reclaim hope. They are as the opening poem suggests, nothing short of communion.Be Specific About Regarding Books Racing Hummingbirds

So vibrant and exciting.A friend bought me Jeanann Verlees' "Racing Hummingbirds" as a late birthday gift. I became interested in her work (and turned my friend onto it) through PANK magazine. Verlee's work is extremely powerful. She does some experimental, interesting things with form. Topics include, but are not limited to, broken hearts, rape, and murder. She also responds to art and real crimes. Verlee's work is also very honest. We seem to experience her inner feelings and thoughts at face value. Verlee's work is
Literally one of the best poetry books I've ever read. I'm so in love with this author; she's a genius. Fierce, rich, strong, tender, fabulous... can't even do it justice.
Jeanann Verlee's debut collection Racing Hummingbirds is raw and painfully beautiful. the collection is about one woman's story strugginling with depression, sexual abuse, poverty and complicated relationships. it's about love and desperation. it's hurtful yet hopeful, it's one of the most beautiful books i've ever read. it's like being inside someone's head hearing their most intimate thoughts, yet it feels like the thoughts are yours, the story is yours, the book is about you.
3.25 starsSerious gems here: Holy, The Great Hush, The Cut, Cleave, And/Or, Exit Wound, Numerology, Presumption, Unrequited.Enjoyed the collection, though I did find the majority of the poems not mentioned above to be pretty obscure and a bit dull, but hey that's what it means to read a poetry collection.
Verlee is my kind of poet, and I would venture my kind of person as well. This work is angry at times, beautiful often, and almost always raw. I could relate to much of it, both the ugliness and the elation. I would recommend this book to those seeking contemporary female poets who aren't afraid to be brutal. It is a brilliant kick to the heart.Book #13 for 2013
