Amid an inferno of explosives on a deadly minefield in the Korean War, a four-legged Marine proved to be a heroic force of nature. She moved headstrong up and down steep, smoky terrain that no man could travail confidently. In a single day, this small Mongolian mare made fifty-one round-trips carrying nearly five tons of explosives to various gun sites. Sergeant Reckless was her name, and she was the horse renowned for carrying wounded soldiers on and off the battlefield and making solo trips across combat zones to deliver supplies.A widely celebrated national hero, Reckless was first featured in 1954 in the Saturday Evening Post and more recently in 1997 when LIFE magazine published an edition lauding history’s one hundred all-time heroes. Equine enthusiast Robin Hutton learned about Sergeant Reckless and spearheaded the effort to commission a monument at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle (Quantico), VA. In July of 2013, the statue was unveiled. A second monument is planned for Camp Pendleton, where Reckless lived out her days and is buried.
Hutton has now written the first-ever full biography of Sergeant Reckless, who earned two Purple Hearts for her heroic efforts (among other military decorations). Hutton has spoken with the Marines who fought alongside Reckless and tells the complete and captivating tale of how a would-be Korean racehorse became one of the greatest Marine wartime heroes. Sgt. A great biography of an amazing horse. She accomplished things many humans haven't. The Korean war is often forgotten, considered part of the longer Vietnam war, and so are the heroes. This biography provides a detailed, interesting account of the life of Sgt. Reckless.I had read Andrew Geer's Sgt. Reckless Pride of the Marines and thought I had the inside scoop on the story of this little red Mongolian mare. I was sadly mistaken. Robin Hutton's Sgt. Without a doubt, I loved the feel-good story of a Mongolian mare that was born to be a Korean racehorse but ended up an integral part of an American Marine platoon, hauling ammunition into battle unguided and unaided. Reckless was definitely a horse of note, and I loved listening to the stories of her personality and grit. A nonfiction account of a soldier-horse? I'm in.That said, this book went on and on and on. It could have been half the length and just as good (or better, with some editing).
This book really meant a lot to me. The story of the little horse was amazing. My father served in Korea. The book reminded me the days of running with my friends on in the back trails of Camp Pendleton. I want to express great fulfillment in taking my than 91 year old dad to the 72nd anniversary of the Iwo Jima in 2016 at Camp Pendleton. He was a 19 year old Marine Amtrak Tank Driver during the Iwo Jima invasion. During the anniversary festivities, my brother, dad and I got to meet Robin Hutton and she sighed a copy of her book that I bought during the event which also included a beautiful presentation on Reckless.I had the author sign and dedicate this book copy for my beautiful wife, Kim the
What an inspiring story and life this small little mare had. She had a definitive personality and joined right in with her troops learning to drink beer and coke. She lived beside her unit, sleep with them and ate their same food. She loved pancakes, bacon and eggs (no pepper), and peanut butter sandwiches. She'd walk into the mess tent for her chow just like any other Marine. I found the funniest story to be during her run up against the commander of a U.S. Naval LST during amphibious training.
